Hi there - I installed the component, created a category, blog and
photographer and now am trying to upload a photo but I keep getting
the following error message:

Filename validation failed.

Question: do I need to create the folders for the blogs / galleries
myself and if so, what is the suggested hierarchy?

The reason I ask is because even though I specified folder names,
I don't see that they have been created when I view my server's
folder structure via FTP.

I think you all have different problems

You don't have to create the files by yourself. The folders are created automatically.

For validation please follow these rules:
* Value must have at least 2 chars
* Have to begin with a charakter (a-z)
* The value could contain Charakters, Numbers and hyphen (-)

You have to look in the Blog Management, there is a link to the stack management, where you are able to upload images...

Can you please check, if the image is really uploaded (in the folder images/photoblog)? Maybe a live link helps to find the problem..

It is not solved. I deleted this mod and used Phoca Gallery. It is so stabil. Thanks.
